Nancy Cox

Executive Director

Nancy brings 30 years of experience working in a variety of teaching and administrative positions in nonprofit and for-profit companies related to education, student access to education and quality teaching.

She most recently served as a principal intern in school administration for Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools. Earlier, she served as the regional educational associate for Peer2Peer Tutors, director of a college application program, AVID program coordinator and elective teacher for Durham Public Schools, teaching quality program coordinator for Durham Public Education Network, marketing and youth leadership program coordinator for Peace Education Program, and middle school social studies teacher. She owned and operated a consultancy with a national company from 2000-2006.

As a member of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education from July 2010 to June 2014, Cox helped create the Made in Durham community partnership, of which Achievement Academy is a partner.

“The board and staff were impressed by her personal commitment to understanding the barriers often faced by our students through her work with the Racial Equity Institute and as an active member of community-based groups focused on these issues,” said Achievement Academy of Durham board treasurer and interim director Dan Oldman.

“I am privileged to live and work in Durham, where we face the issues together and work collaboratively toward solutions,” said Cox.

Cox holds a Masters in school administration from N.C. Central University, a master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Virginia.

She is co-chair of the Sister Cities of Durham Youth Committee, volunteer with AFS Intercultural High School Exchange and past member of the Durham Public Schools Raising Achievement Closing the Gap Committee and East Durham Children’s Initiative Education Committee, legislative liaison for the Parent Teacher Association and board member of Orange County Communities in Schools.
